Choosing your Aran Islands day
The Aran Islands can be reached on a return ferry or visited through an organised excursion, but the departure harbour changes the whole plan. Rossaveel lies west of Galway and serves Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr throughout the year, subject to weather. A city departure and a Rossaveel ticket are different journeys: decide where you are joining before arranging the rest of the morning.
Inis Mór is the largest island and the choice covered in detail by our Inis Mór guide, including Dún Aonghasa and the onward journey from Cill Rónáin. Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr are also served from Rossaveel. Choose the island by its sailing arrangements and the day you actually have available rather than trying to fit several islands into one loosely planned trip.

Aran Islands ferry departures and harbour access
Rossaveel is about 37 km west of Galway. The ferry information viewed on 2 November 2026 suggests about an hour for the approach from the city. Crossing estimates are approximately 40 minutes to Inis Mór, 50 minutes to Inis Meáin and 55 minutes to Inis Oírr. These are sea-journey estimates, so leave separate room for reaching the harbour and boarding rather than treating the crossing as the full city-to-island journey.
The Galway shuttle leaves from Victoria Place near Eyre Square and must be booked at least 12 hours ahead. It is separate from the ferry. It carries neither bicycles nor animals nor freight. This makes it useful for a passenger travelling light, while someone bringing a bicycle needs a different plan for getting that bicycle to the harbour.
The published Doolin season ran from 28 February to 1 November 2026. At the 2 November review it had ended. Keep that seasonal boundary separate from Rossaveel's year-round pattern, and choose future journeys from the timetable for the intended date. For your route into Galway itself, see the arrival guide.
Ferry, organised transport or city cruise?
The Rossaveel return-ferry ticket covers the boat journey to Inis Mór and back. Harbour parking is extra, as are bike hire, food and other island activities. It starts at Rossaveel, with the land journey arranged separately. It suits travellers who want to organise their own hours ashore rather than follow an island guide.
The Galway Bay return-cruise option includes the return cruise to Inis Mór and an audio guide about the islands' archaeology, natural heritage and stone fortresses. Its meeting point is beside the Port of Galway Office at the city docks. Choose it for that departure arrangement and those included services; allow separately for what you decide to do after landing.
Island time and Dún Aonghasa
A ferry crossing is only the opening part of an Inis Mór visit. Dún Aonghasa lies about 7 km west of Cill Rónáin, and reaching the fort includes roughly 1 km on foot from its visitor centre over rising, sometimes rough rock. The suggested visit is about 1 to 1.5 hours. Choose the return sailing first, then work backwards through your island transport and the walk so the fort does not become a hurried stop.
The cliff edge is unguarded. Wear sturdy footwear and keep well back, especially when pausing for a photograph. If the fort is central to your plans, use the dedicated island page for winter opening and admission rather than assuming that a return-ferry ticket includes a guided visit or entrance. Keep a city activity available as an alternative if conditions disrupt sailing; the Galway sightseeing guide gives you options ashore.
Fares and weather planning
For the Rossaveel service, the adult return fare shown at the 2 November 2026 review is EUR 34, with an adult return shuttle fare of EUR 10 booked separately. These transport fares are distinct from excursion prices. Start with the departure you want and compare the complete arrangement, including your way to the harbour, rather than using a single boat fare as the cost of the entire island day.
Year-round operation describes the service pattern, while wind and sea conditions determine individual sailings. Leave flexibility in your stay and avoid building a critical onward connection around the last possible island return. The weather guide explains why climate averages and the forecast for a particular crossing answer different questions.
Cliffs of Moher and the Burren
The combined 10.5-hour Galway excursion includes an air-conditioned bus, a guide-driver, return ferry tickets and admission to the Cliffs of Moher. Island activities and lunch are extra, and it starts on Merchants Road rather than with hotel collection. This is an organised combination day rather than the same purchase as an independent return ferry. For the separate mainland visit, read the Burren and Cliffs of Moher.
Questions about island journeys
Does the Rossaveel ferry include a Galway pickup?
The return-ferry ticket starts at Rossaveel harbour. The shuttle from Victoria Place is a separate booking made at least 12 hours beforehand.
Can I use Doolin in November 2026?
The published season ended on 1 November 2026. Use the date-specific sailing arrangements when planning a later trip, rather than extending that seasonal timetable.
Is Dún Aonghasa part of the ferry ticket?
The Rossaveel product covers the return crossing. Plan your island transport and fort admission separately, and leave time for the rough uphill approach.
